Preventative Medicine

Vaccinations & Annual Health Checks

Vaccinations are an important part of protecting your pet against serious viral and bacterial diseases. The initial course for puppies starts at 6-8 weeks and is followed by 2 more injections at 10-12 weeks and then 14-16 weeks. Kittens need to be vaccinated at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks for their routine vaccinations. Following their final puppy/kitten vaccination, we recommend yearly health checks for life, including booster vaccinations as required. For more information, please call the clinic on 44742532

Dentals

Dental disease can cause significant pain in your pet and lead to other serious illnesses.  Dental disease in our pets results in significant pain, just as it does in us.  Pets may show this pain by chewing on one side or a change in behaviour such as not playing as vigorously. Or you simply may not notice that your pet has dental disease and is in pain. That’s why here at the Moruya veterinary hospital we encourage annual dental checks so we can assess your pets dental health, and advise you of any treatments or preventative care that can be done.

We have sophisticated dental equipment to give your pets the best in dental care.   Tartar and plaque are removed with an ultrasonic scaler before the teeth are polished.  Diseased teeth can be removed if necessary under general anaesthetic.  Pain is managed with local anaesthetic blocks and pre-operative and post-operative pain relief.  We understand how sensitive the mouth is to pain and try our very best to minimise this.

All dental procedures are carried out under general anaesthetic.

Surgery

Our clinic has full surgery room to perform routine procedures such as spey, castration and lump removals. We are also able to perform more involved surgeries such as orthopaedic procedures including cruciate ligament repairs, intra-abdominal surgery and larger lump removals. We believe that anaesthetic monitoring is paramount so we dedicate a nurse to watch your pet the whole time they are under anaesthetic. As well as the human touch we also have sophisticated monitoring equipment such as pulse oximetry, apalert, blood pressure monitoring, and oesophageal thermometer. This equipment is routinely used on all of our anaesthetics.  As part of every anaesthetic we include intravenous fluids to help maintain blood pressure and keep our patients well hydrated throughout the procedure. For all procedures involving an anaesthetic We encourage pre-operative blood testing, especially for animals over 7 years of age, and this is carried out on the premises for fast, accurate results

Imaging

Radiography and ultrasound

We use radiography and ultrasound to enable us to diagnose those issues that we can not see from simply looking at your pet. Xrays are a useful non-invasive tool that has many applications, from assessing bones to lungs and abdominal organs. We are able to offer both plain and contrast Xrays (such as barium studies).

We utilise in-house digital radiography (DR). DR provides us with instant, high-quality images to interpret in-house, or send to specialist vets for further assessment.

We routinely sedate our patients with a safe low dose sedation for all x-rays. This ensures our patients are comfortable, not stressed, and most importantly not moving!. It also allows us to safely position our patients whilst not having to expose ourselves to excessive amounts of radiation, (as you could imagine, we take a lot of x-rays on a daily/weekly basis).
